Devinn Geeson
Dr. Devinn Geeson, DDS, RDH — “Dr. G, the Pep Talk Doc” has experienced dentistry from virtually every seat in the practice. She began her career as a dental assistant, became a registered dental hygienist and office manager, and ultimately earned her DDS and became a dentist and practice owner.
Her entrepreneurial journey has included de novo startups, practice acquisitions, multi-practice ownership, and successful practice sales. In under five years, she built and scaled a three-practice group before completing a highly successful exit—giving her firsthand experience in the entire practice lifecycle, from startup and acquisition through growth, optimization, valuation, and sale.
Today, Dr. Geeson is an entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and founder of Smiles At Sea, creating destination dental CE experiences that combine clinical education, business growth, leadership, culture, and connection. With nearly four decades in dentistry, she brings a rare 360-degree perspective—from chairside team member to clinician, multi-practice owner, buyer, builder, and seller—and teaches dental professionals how to build better teams, stronger businesses, and careers designed for both profit and purpose.
Legend & Lore: Stop Searching. Start Building.
Description:
Every industry has its legends—the elusive, extraordinary creatures everyone talks about but few have actually seen. Dentistry has one too: the “unicorn” team member. We search for them, recruit for them, and convince ourselves that the right person will arrive fully formed and ready to transform the practice.
But what if we’ve been searching—and interviewing—for the wrong thing?
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
Recognize why searching for the “perfect hire” can lead to repeated hiring cycles, unmet expectations, and costly turnover.
Apply functional interviewing techniques that evaluate real-world thinking, problem-solving, communication, initiative, and role-specific capabilities rather than relying solely on traditional interview questions.
Identify the leadership, culture, systems, expectations, and development strategies that transform potential into high performance.
Shift from simply searching for talent to intentionally selecting, developing, and retaining people who can grow with the practice.
